Budgeting for your Kitchen Remodel Plans

Determine whether or not you can finance the kitchen remodeling project yourself, or if you will need to obtain a loan.

Establish priorities for your remodeling project. Figure out what you need to spend the most money on; the total amount you can spend; and the total amount that you would need to borrow (and could borrow).

If you find that you cannot afford to remodel your kitchen at this time, there are some rather inexpensive things you can do to upgrade your kitchen. You could update the walls by painting them a different color, and add new window coverings.

You can incorporate cost effective measures in many ways. For example, if the cabinets in your kitchen are in good shape, don’t replace them; instead, refinish them or paint them and change the hardware. You can achieve a new look for your kitchen merely by changing (or painting) the cabinets.

It is important to know ahead of time what you will be spending as far as labor and materials so that you can stay within your budget.

You can get very creative in cutting corners in your kitchen. For example, if you don’t have the funds to install an island in your kitchen, consider using a rolling cart. Many different carts are available, from lightweight metal to those that are crafted of fine woods. They may also contain drawers, shelves and hangers for large utensils. These carts also have the advantage of being moved when you need to clean or need the extra floor space.

Cabinets are normally the most expensive feature when it comes to remodeling the kitchen. In fact, they can use up to about one-half of your overall budget. If you find that you cannot afford new cabinets, there are some less expensive alternatives. For example, you might consider refacing, rather than replacing the cabinets. Refacing includes the replacement of the doors and exterior wood. Since these are the areas that are seen, they would still enhance the appearance of your kitchen. You might also consider painting your existing cabinets and purchasing new hardware; this would be the cheapest alternative.

You could also cut corners on the flooring and countertops in order to save money. For the flooring, you could substitute vinyl flooring rather than installing ceramic tile. However, if you are able to install the ceramic tiles yourself, you would be saving money so consider that aspect as well. As for the countertops, these vary a great deal depending on the material. You can opt for materials that merely resemble marble, butcher’s block or other costly materials, thereby saving you a great deal of money.

Another money saving aspect is to do as much of the labor as you can yourself. However, make sure you are able to do the job correctly, or it may end up costing you more in the long run to have someone fix it.
